Magnetic North by the 2024 MFA Photography cohort at the University of Hartford brings together the work of ELEVEN lens-based artists. Their photographic works represent a wide range of approaches and intentions, but all employ photographic tradition – photography’s unique trait of capturing the world as it is – as a starting point. They each seek to reach through and beyond this surface layer of visual truth by exploring inner experience, place, home, desire, intimacy and absence. Directed by tools of wayfinding within their individual practices, they meet at Magnetic North. It is not a place but an orientation that allows for paths to cross and ideas to incubate.
